John Maynard

 

John Maynard is a Worimi Aboriginal man and Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Newcastle. He is a former Deputy Chairperson of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, and member of the Executive Committees of the Australian Historical Association, the New South Wales History Council, the Indigenous Higher Education Advisory Council, the Australian Research Council College of Experts, the National Indigenous Research and Knowledges Network and the NSW Fulbright Selection Committee. He gained his PhD in 2003, examining the rise of early Aboriginal political activism. He has worked with and within many Aboriginal communities, urban, rural, and remote. He was awarded the Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from the Australian Historical Association in 2022, and the Annual History Citation from the History Council of NSW in 2023. John’s publications have concentrated on the intersections of Aboriginal political and social history, and the history of Australian race relations. He is also the author of several books on Indigenous people and sport, including The Aboriginal Soccer Tribe (2019 2nd Ed), and Aborigines and the Sport of Kings. His most recent book is a two-volume publication on Socceroos – A World Cup Odyssey, 1965 to 2022 (2023).
